Later update:
 October 22th, 2009

General Information:

Date: Monday 26 - Wednesday 28, October, 2009.
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Venue: Centro Nacional de Aceleradores (CNA). Isla de La Cartuja. Seville, Spain.
Contact: For further information regarding this event, please contact Rafael García-Tenorio  by sending email to leadpolonium2009@us.es or by calling +34  954 55 66 25.

Objectives:

If we consider the field of environmental studies, Pb-210 has been used with success for the determination of sedimentation rates and grow rate of peat bogs. However, other factors such as the migration processes have not been studied for very large extent.   Nowadays, Po-210 has received a great interest , from a radiological and a biogeochemical point of view due to the killing of

Mr. Litvienko, from Russia. Although a significant work on this isotope was carried out in 1960-70 decade, at these times no yield determinants was often used and the accuracies might be questioned.

The radiochemistry of polonium is relatively simple, compared to other alpha emitters. So, not much effort has been done to develop new methods of analysis.

Kinetics studies of the Po-isotopes give very different values. The fractional uptake in man is given as 0.2 - 0.8 and the biological half-life is in the range 30 - 100 days, showing the uncertainty in de dose estimation. Organ distribution is important and it has been recently shown that a large fraction is associated to the hair.

Finally, the volatility of polonium makes this radionuclide to be the most important one in some NORM industries form an occupational dose point of view.
