Apparatus

1 te lapis Stylow. – 2 obtestor Hübner. – 10–11 Iaccus vir d.d Hübner, d(e) s(uo) d(at) Stylow, II2/5. – 11 [patronus(?)] d(e) suppl. Cugusi dubitans.

Commentary

Elegiac distich; in this case, it is clearly a use of a model designed for a man (conditus, l. 6, cf., IHV p. 91), what is relatively frequent in this type of form (cf. CLE 723); the male ending has got moreover, compared to the feminine one condita, the advantage of perfectly fitting in the meter. L. 2 optestor pro obtestor.

In the subscriptum the name and the social status of the deceased are specified: Graeca ser(va), as well as that of the dedicant: Iacchus; the presence of the conjunction et in l. 10 could lead us to think that there are two dedicants (a husband and one of her sons: Stylow, II2/5 proposes a heres), in which case, we could develop d(ederunt) in l. 11. However, nothing prevents us from supposing that there was a sole dedicant vir et [sodalis] (cf. Puerta-Stylow, 1985, p. 322). As for the Greek cognomina, cf., for Graeca, frequent for slaves and liberti, Kajanto 1982, p. 204; for the much more rare Iacchus, cf. Solin 1982, p. 311 ff. (who only registers three, two of which incerti and the other one as the name of a slave).
