Second anual workshop of the MecBioLab group in Seville
On September 20, 2024, the second annual workshop of our research group took place, where the research lines developed during the last year were presented. One more year, we had the attendance of a group of students from the University of Cadiz interested in mechanobiology.
Ana, Juanjo and Pablo presented at the ESB 2024 congress in Edinburgh
At the beginning of July, the ESB took place in Edinburgh:
-Ana presented her work ‘A Hybrid Continuum/Discrete Model of a Vascularized Organoid Embedded in a Hydrogel’.
-Juanjo, his experimental work ‘Influence of Electrical Stimulation on Osteoporotic Regeneration of Large Bone Defects’.
-And Pablo, ‘Gait Analysis During the Regeneration of Critical-Size Bone Defects Treated with Bioceramics Scaffolds’.
In addition, Esther has been elected as part of the ESB council. Congratulations, Esther!
IUTAM 2024 at the School of Engineering of Seville
We have organized the IUTAM 2024 congress Theoretical and Numerical Developments in Cellular Mechanobiology that has taken place at the Engineering School of Seville, from June 3 to 5, 2024.

Interview to Esther Reina in PCT 'Protagonistas en Femenino'
In this interview conducted by the PCT program with Esther Reina, she talks about the importance of mechanics in solving biological problems, such as osteoporosis or cancer, and about the presence of women in the world of research.
Engineers and doctors taught the Mechanobiology course at UNIA
The Mechanobiology course held at the UNIA last July, was structured in different lectures given by José Antonio Sanz, Esther Reina, Juan Mora, Javier Martínez, Yadir Torres, Miguel Ángel Giráldez and Manuel Doblaré.

During the last course of Mechanobiology at the UNIA, the program «Al Sol del Sur» interviewed José Antonio Sanz, director of the course. In this interview, he talked about the discipline of Bioengineering and the fundamental role of the engineer in the resolution of biological problems.
Summer school on Mechanobiology in La Rábida
Our group is organizing the summer course Mecanobiología: Una visión de problemas clínicos abordados por ingenieros. It will take place at the International University of Andalusia (UNIA), located in La Rábida (Huelva), from July 24 to 27. The course will be organized in different lectures given by engineers and doctors.
First workshop of our MecBioLab group in Seville
On July 14, 2023, we held the first meeting of the MECBIOLAB research group, where all the PhD students presented a summary of their latest work. In addition, we had the attendance of students from the School of Engineering of Seville and the University of Cadiz.
Part of our team will travel to Maastricht for ESB 2023
- Ana and Juan José present their works ‘Agent-based modeling of spheroid-ECM interaction and evolution under fluid flow’ and ‘In vivo mechanical characterization of the osteoporotic distraction callus’, respectively.
- Pablo has been nominated for a poster award for his work ‘Effects of the collagen composition on the mechanical microenvironment of breast cancer cells’ and Juan also presents his poster ‘Mineral density and microstructural morphology of woven bone during distraction osteogenesis’.

- Esther Reina gives the Keynote Lecture Multiscale mechanobiological analysis of the newly regenerated bone.
- José Antonio Sanz and Juan Mora organise the special session Multiscale Mechanobiology.
- Alejandro Apolinar and Juan Mora will present their works Influence of cancer-induced ECM degradation on traction force microscopy: an in silico study and Computed-tomographic imaging for the in vivo regeneration of critical-sized ceramic scaffolds, respectively.
Pablo Blázquez won the Manuel Gayán Buiza Award
On 9 March 2023, Pablo Blázquez was awarded the Manuel Gayán Buiza prize for his doctoral thesis. This award aims to promote studies and research in engineering.

On October 21, 2022 Pablo Blázquez presented his doctoral thesis entitled ‘Mechanobiology of Bone Regeneration: Distraction Osteogenesis and Tissue Engineering’, receiving the grade of Cum Laude.
Esther Reina received the Manuel Losada Villasante Award
Last June 2022, Esther Reina received from the X Edition of the Manuel Losada Villasante Awards the prize in Innovation Research for her work ‘Mechanical Engineering applied to bone regeneration processes’.
Alejandro, Pablo and Ana attended the ESB 2022 congress in Porto
- Alejandro presented his work on TFM ‘Performance of linear and nonlinear approaches in traction force microscopy for collagen hydrogels’.
- Pablo told us about bone biomechanics ‘Mechano-structural maturation of the bone callus tissue under distraction’.
- And Ana about cell mechanobiology ‘Agent – Based model of vasculogenesis including cell – ECM interactions’.
