The scutoid hug

Abstract:

Without doubts, the discover of the scutoid, as the geometric solution given by nature to cells in order to allow epithelial tissues to fold, is a clear example of a hug between mathematics and cellular biology. And the story of that discover started thanks to the work in math popularization by Dr. Grima. Thanks to that work, Dr Escudero (a biologist) contacted her and Dr. Márquez (two mathematicians) asking to help him in his research. That was, the initial hug, but more people joinned them and finally it was necessary the help of computer scientifics (doing, amog other things a very needed work as “bridges” between different disciplines) and physicists.
