Via Campesina
Via Campesina is an international movement that brings together millions of peasants, small and medium-sized farmers, Indigenous people, and rural workers worldwide. Founded in 1993, it defends sustainable agriculture and food sovereignty against corporate control and agribusiness.
The movement structures its global work and activism around several key pillars:
- Food Sovereignty: This is its flagship concept. It defends the right of peoples to define their own policies and systems for food production, distribution, and consumption.
- Agroecology: It promotes sustainable agricultural practices that respect the environment, reject the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and foster autonomy in seed selection.
- Agrarian Reform: It fights for equitable access to land, water, and natural resources, opposing land concentration and evictions.
- Peasant Rights: It has been a leading force behind the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas.
Currently, it comprises some 182 local and national organizations in more than 80 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
