Recommended admission profile
In the information and advertising channels established for the Doctoral Program (PD), it will be indicated that the recommended admission profile is for students with:
- Training in Sciences and/or Engineering at the official University Master's level (EHEA).
- Interest in research and development.
Knowledge of languages is recommended for following these studies. Knowledge of the English language is especially relevant, given that many activities of the program are carried out in that language (there are both lecturers and students in the PD whose primary language is English, which is also the international lingua franca in the field of physics).
Many Spanish students have a B1 level in English (since accreditation at that level is required to complete their bachelor's degrees), a level that should allow them to follow the program's activities without difficulty. The accreditation of a level equal to or higher than B2 in English will be positively valued in the admission process.
The supervision of student access will be carried out by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program (CA), whose composition is detailed in section 8 of the verification report, with representation from all of its research lines.
Specific access criteria
The Academic Committee will be responsible for the selection and admission of students to it.
The admission procedure will begin with the application for admission to a doctoral program at the University of Seville. This application must be made using a standardized form within the deadlines established for this purpose. In said form, the student must select the permanence regime in the program, providing the corresponding supporting documentation.
Students with an official Master's degree (EHEA) from the branches of knowledge of Sciences (specialization in Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics) or the branch of Engineering and Architecture (specialization in Electronic, Computer, or Telecommunication Engineering) may enter the doctoral program without training supplements.
The CA may admit students from other university master's degrees. To do so, it will assess that the contents of the completed studies are akin to or related to the research lines of this PD, being able to establish the necessary training supplements. This same procedure will apply to foreign students who, not having completed a master's degree, have completed studies that qualify them for admission to a doctoral program in their home country.
The admission and selection of students in the PD will be governed by the following criteria regardless of their dedication regime. Following the agreements of the academic committee of the program, in its minutes number 54:
- The obligation to provide a letter of endorsement from a professor of the program expressing their willingness to act as a tutor for the student's thesis is established. In this letter of endorsement, the program professor may state that they wish to (i) act as tutor and director of the student's thesis, solely or in co-direction with another researcher, or (ii) act solely as a tutor, with the director or directors being other doctoral researchers. If any of the proposed directors do not belong to the doctoral program, it will be necessary to attach their curriculum vitae.
- After verifying the correctness of the endorsement letter described in 1), the following aspects of the student's application will be evaluated:
- Affinity of the degree that grants access to the PD with its research lines. (Maximum score: 50 points out of 100). Degrees with knowledge and skills related to the doctoral program will be especially valued.
- Curriculum vitae. (Maximum score: 50 points out of 100). The evaluation in this criterion will take into account:
- The academic record (60%).
- Level of foreign languages. Certificates accrediting knowledge of languages according to the regulations established in the EHEA will be especially valued. In the case of the English language, it will be evaluated from the B2 level of the CEFR. In the case of other languages of scientific relevance (French, German, Chinese, ...) it will be evaluated from the B1 level (15%).
- Professional and/or research experience (15%).
- Other merits (10%).
A minimum score of 65 points will be necessary for access to the PD.
The condition of a part-time student is granted by the CA based on the student's labor, family, or personal criteria. This condition must be requested each academic year during the enrollment period, providing the supporting documents that justify it.
Admission procedure and criteria for part-time students
The admission procedure will begin with the application for admission to a doctoral program at the University of Seville. This application must be made using a standardized form within the deadlines established for this purpose. In said form, the student must select the permanence regime in the program, providing the corresponding supporting documentation.
It will be the Academic Committee of the program that, once the admission applications are received, will have to authorize which students will pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis; those students who are authorized by the Academic Committee of the program to carry out their studies part-time will formalize their enrollment for academic tutelage within the deadlines established for this purpose.
Controversies arising regarding the admission of part-time students will be resolved by the International Doctoral School of the University of Seville.
The admission criteria for part-time students will be the same as for the rest of the students accessing doctoral studies. Only those persons whose link to the University of Seville or another university or public or private entity necessarily implies the realization of a doctoral thesis during the execution time of the scholarship or contract are excluded from the possibility of being considered part-time students.
Training supplements
Students who have not previously completed an official University Master's degree (EHEA) in the branch of knowledge of Sciences (specialization in Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics) or in the branch of Engineering and Architecture (specialization in Electronic, Computer, or Telecommunication Engineering) must take up to 18 ECTS of training supplements that will be determined by the CA of the Program based on their admission profile. The subjects taken must be chosen from official Master's degree courses with contents akin to the research lines in which the student will carry out their work. The training supplements will be established by the Academic Committee, after consultation with the student's tutor. Complementary training will be carried out in the first year of enrollment in the PD.
