The Physics degree at the University of Seville (US) has a long tradition: the Bachelor's degree in Physical Sciences began being taught in 1963, within the Faculty of Sciences. Fifteen years later, in 1978, the Faculty of Physics was created, where the Bachelor's degree in Physics was taught until 2013. Since 2009, the current Bachelor's degree in Physics has been taught. Currently, the Bachelor's Degree in Materials Engineering is also taught, with EUR-ACE accreditation, along with the double degrees in Physics and Materials Engineering, Chemistry and Materials Engineering, and Physics and Mathematics, the latter in collaboration with the Faculties of Chemistry and Mathematics, respectively.
The degree offerings of the Faculty of Physics at the US are completed with various university master's degrees: Master's in Microelectronics: Design and Applications of Micro/Nanometric Systems (online), Master's in Nuclear Physics (interuniversity), and the Master's in Physical Technologies for Medicine and Biology. The Master's in Nuclear Physics is organized jointly with the Complutense and Autonomous Universities of Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, and Salamanca, the CSIC, and the CIEMAT.
Consequently, the Doctoral Program (DP) in Physical Sciences and Technologies, in which more than a hundred professors participate and which allows for the completion of the Doctoral Thesis in a wide variety of research topics, fits naturally into the scope of university studies in Physics at the US. It has been taught since 2013, when it was created within the framework of RD99/2011, as a consequence of the merger of the pre-existing Doctoral Programs in Microelectronics, on the one hand, and Nuclear Physics, on the other, along with the incorporation of professors from the knowledge areas of Electromagnetism, Theoretical Physics, and Applied Physics, and CSIC researchers teaching postgraduate studies at the US.
At the time of verification, the center responsible for the DP was the Faculty of Physics of the US. Currently, the center responsible for the DP is the International Doctoral School of the University of Seville (EIDUS), which brings together the institution's doctoral offerings and is in charge of organizing the teaching and activities specific to the doctorate in line with the research and internationalization strategy of the University of Seville. The affiliation of EIDUS to the International Postgraduate School provides a reference framework to face the challenges that RD 99/2011 poses regarding the training of our future doctors; a framework centered on quality, excellence, knowledge transfer, and internationalization. EIDUS's policy is committed to interdisciplinary and transnational research that favors the identification of synergies and collaboration opportunities, as well as alliances with companies and institutions that support and consolidate research and promote mobility. Along with this, it is necessary to highlight the Doctoral Training through transversal activities promoted by EIDUS; oriented towards the development of personal and professional skills that are transferable to both academic and non-academic fields. Finally, it should be noted that EIDUS, through its Steering Committee, is responsible for guaranteeing the highest quality of the US doctoral programs, coordinating and driving their excellence and internationalization.
The faculty body of the DP in Physical Sciences and Technologies is very stable since its verification in 2013. In the period between the initial verification and the modification made in the 2025–26 academic year, effective from the 2026–27 academic year, there have been some losses due to death and a number of additions. The number of professors is currently around 100, for an average enrolled student body of 60 per academic year in recent years as detailed in the accreditation renewal (2025). All of the professors meet the requirements to supervise theses (see https://institucional.us.es/doctoradocytf/profesorado-investigacion/profesores).
