Comentary

Fragment of an inscription, probably from a public building, in dactyls (possibly hexameters). Fita attributes the text to C. Vallius Maximianus, procurator of Mauretania Tingitana under the mandate of emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, during which time he defended Baetica. It is too fragmentary to draw any definite conclusions. However, Rodríguez de Berlanga, on the basis of luce (l. 5), suggests that the opus egregium (l. 5) could be identified with the lighthouse whose memory is preserved in the name of the hill above the Alcazaba: Gibralfaro. Following this hypothesis and aware of the limitations when reconstructing the seven verses with accurate prosody and metre he proposed a prose (!) reconstruction of the lost part. Parallels: CLE 1910,1; 1996,5. Lack of graphic assimilation in adquiri, l. 7.
