Comentary

Rodríguez de Berlanga came up with a different transcription:

[—]
seu manus IN[—]
Heu cito praerepto transacta est
flore iuuentia
quam multa e uotis expatiere
nurus
l[ubrica] f[emina] numquit quoque
summa fores.

From the metrical point of view the initial version would have contained a fragment of elegiac carmen. The reading by Rodríguez de Berlanga is metrically incorrect in verse 2 and especially in verse 4:

[—]
seu manus IN[—]
Heu cito praerepto transacta est flore Iuuentia final klkk
quam multa e uotis expatiere nurus
l[ubrica] f[emina] numquit quoque summa fores lkklkklkklkk~

This edition proposes the text as transmitted by Moreno Maldonado. Topos of mors immatura doubly emphasised (cito and prefix prae-). With heu the dative praerepto; similar cases, heu with vocatives, accusatives, or datives, referring to people, are found both in the literature and in epigraphy (Verg. Aen. 2,738, Ou. Tr. 2,180, CLE 1337,1; 1336,1). Another topos is the metaphor of youth as flos aetatis (cf., for example, CLE 113b,2; 1149,1; 970,1). The word order of the sequence flore iuuentus, with a well-established literary and epigraphical tradition, makes it difficult to propose, as did Rodríguez de Berlanga 1907 and León 1970b, the separation of flore and iuuentus (cf. in Virgil the clausula flore iuuentus: Aen. 7,162, and epigraphical parallels: CLE 1620,3; CLE 1116,1, etc.). For nurus as a “girl” or “young woman”, there are literary antecedents such as Ov. Met. 2,366; 6,44-5,587-8 or Mart. 4,75,2, in addition to some
epigraphical parallels such as CLE 1559,2.
