Comentary
Vocabulary and the echo of Verg. Aen. 6,429 in l. 4 show the metrical character of the text, probably two distichs. The second and third lines would be the beginning of verses.
Völlmer’s interpretation of this as a funus publicum should be rejected: the vocabulary (tristis, ablatum) and the quote from Verg. belong to the topos of mors immatura. l. 1, cf. Ps. Quint., Decl. 10,1: ac ne confusi quidem tristi cinere vultus. L. 4, cf. Verg. Aen. 6,429: abstulit atra dies et funere mersit acerbo. It is not unusual for the quote to have been modified, cf. CLE 1355,2 or ILCV 2391c.
