11:30 Physics Informed and Trustworthy AI for Smart Energy Systems.

By Dr. Luca Oneto

Abstract

As smart energy systems become increasingly complex, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) offers transformative potential for optimization, efficiency, and resilience. However, realizing this potential depends on developing AI solutions that are not only powerful but also grounded in physical laws and principles.

This seminar explores the cutting-edge field of Physics-Informed AI, where domain knowledge from physics is incorporated into AI models to create robust and trustworthy solutions for smart energy systems. Attendees will gain insights into the fundamentals of Physics-Informed AI, its applications in areas such as predictive maintenance, demand forecasting, and grid optimization.

The seminar will also address the concept of Trustworthy AI, highlighting methods for ensuring explainability, fairness, and robustness in AI-driven energy systems.

Finally, we’ll discuss the evolving regulatory landscape surrounding AI, examining the implications for the development and deployment of AI solutions in the energy sector. This seminar is ideal for researchers, engineers, and energy professionals seeking to harness the power of AI while ensuring its reliability and responsible use within smart energy systems.

Biography

Luca Oneto was born in Rapallo, Italy in 1986. He received his BSc and MSc in Electronic Engineering at the University of Genoa, Italy respectively in 2008 and 2010.

In 2014 he received his PhD from the same university in the School of Sciences and Technologies for Knowledge and Information Retrieval with the thesis «Learning Based On Empirical Data». In 2017 he obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification for the role of Associate Professor in Computer Engineering and in 2018 he obtained the one in Computer Science. He worked as Assistant Professor in Computer Engineering at University of Genoa from 2016 to 2019. In 2018 he was co-founder of the spin-off ZenaByte s.r.l.

He is currently Associate Professor in Computer Science at University of Pisa with particular interests in Statistical Learning Theory and Data Science. Besides being an editorial board member of the book series Modeling and Optimization in Science and Technologies he is also co-author of the textbook Introduction to Digital Systems Design (Donzellini et al., Springer, 2019).

15:00 Foundations on Deep Learning.

By Dr. Javier María Mora Merchán

Abstract

The workshop is designed to introduce the fundamental concepts of deep learning in a gradual and accessible manner, culminating in the construction of a comprehensive example to illustrate these concepts. Mathematical formulations are avoided wherever possible to ensure that the topics discussed are readily comprehensible.

By the end of the course, participants will have developed a basic understanding of deep learning architectures.

Biography

Javier M. Mora-Merchán completed his doctorate in the Industrial Computing program at the University of Seville, where he currently works as a teacher. Additionally, he has a Master’s degree in automation (from the US), a degree in Industrial Electronics (from the University of León) and a Technical Engineering in Electricity (US).

He is a member of the TIC-150 research group, where he specializes in signal analysis and intelligent data processing techniques.
